“America's action packed insurance investigator”

Bob Bailey was born to play the role of America’s insurance investigator with the action packed expense account. He brought a realistic depth and like-ability to the lead role of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar that had been lacking in earlier versions of the show. Bailey, with his debut on the show in 1955, had an opportunity to stretch his legs in a five day a week adventure. Even though the multipart episodes gave the show a different feel, it held onto its uniqueness even after the switch back to a traditional half hour format in 1956. Bailey’s relate-ability and especially his ownership of the role of Johnny Dollar not only kept fans listening, but continually brought on new listeners. Bailey seemed to become Johnny as soon as the microphone came on and even when he broke character, it was still the world’s favorite insurance investigator talking to the audience.

Even though the shows were shorter and now self contained instead of divided into five chapters as they had been for over a year, the producers and Bailey did not hold back on various innovations. In particular, it’s this period of shows that took Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar to a new level, strongly establishing the fact that Johnny’s adventures were real and being performed each week as the radio show itself. Johnny would often hear from people he ran into about listening to him on the radio and would reference the show himself. Show staff, such as director and writer Jack Johnstone, were often name dropped in various episodes and even, at times, made an integral part of the story.

This Radio Archives collection features sixteen thirty minute episodes of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar starring Bob Bailey. As you listen to Dollar as he painstakingly pursues each case to its conclusion, note the extensive research that has obviously gone into each script; the action always takes place in real locations, complete with real street names, and landmarks are frequently noted throughout the shows. Local stations that broadcast Johnny Dollar are often mentioned, as well as the actual names of their personnel -- an interesting and amusing way to sustain interest in the show among network radio affiliates that might (or might not) be willing to carry it at all. This added to the concept that the program was really just Johnny’s true adventures being related to listeners each week, a hook that kept fans coming back even after Bailey had left the program.

The sound patterns, the musical scores, and the realistic dialog paint such a true audio picture that you can't help being swept into the adventure that each episode of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar offers. And the performers, including such radio veterans as Virginia Gregg, Lawrence Dobkin, Eleanor Audley, Lurene Tuttle, Harry Bartell, Sam Edwards, Joseph Kearns, Marvin Miller, William Conrad, Jeanette Nolan, and Richard Crenna, demonstrate their diverse talents in a series of realistic and textured characterizations.

Long-time fans of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar, will find humor, action, and mystery in these sixteen self contained episodes, some of the best of Bailey’s work restored to sparkling audio quality in Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar Volume 9.
