The Whistler

I am the Whistler and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak!

One of the best remembered radio shows of its type, The Whistler chronicled the twists and turns in the lives of unsuspecting characters each week. Usually, regular people living day to day lives who made one horrible life changing decision were at the center of each episode, caught and strangled by their mistakes, their own emotions, their self destructive tendencies. And from a distance, almost never actively participating, never reaching out to help or to stop the inevitable doom was The Whistler. An observer who offered succinct thoughts on the rights and wrongs of those he watched committed and who, when the final shoe dropped, left listeners trembling with his creepy, lingering laugh.

Described by many as an anthology program, and others as a horror or mystery show, The Whistler indeed was all these things. In many ways, however, the program was first and foremost a crime show. What made it stand out from other programs of the same type was the use of the show’s namesake, the unseen, almost never participating observer with the eerie laugh and often chilling platitudes to share each week. The Whistler was not the first host of this type, but definitely left his mark as one of the most memorable.

Experience the weird justice of The Whistler in this astounding Radio Archives collection. Listen to twelve broadcasts, restored to sparkling digital quality as originally aired from November, 1942 to February, 1943.

The sale price on this collection was a siren song to yours truly...but any WHISTLER set from Radio Archives is worth any tariff. One of old-time radio's best programs gets the full pampered treatment from this company.

For some people, The Whistler is probably an also ran, outdone by Suspense and its range of subject matter and those big Hollywood stars in leading roles. But The Whistler, I think, had more twists and turns.
