The Phantom Detective #92 Audiobook
The Phantom and the Crime Legion
by Robert Wallace
Read by Milton Bagby

Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime! Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’s masked nightmare!

Like a brutal devastating army, vicious thugs swoop down on America — and it’s up to the Phantom to smash the sinister crime conspiracy and expose its ruthless, power-greedy leader!

Only two authors’ names ever appeared on the covers of The Phantom Detective Magazine as being responsible for the masked sleuth’s tales - G. Wayman Jones and Robert Wallace. These two men never existed, but were house names concealing the names of an extensive list of writers, the number and identities of said house writers often debated by experts and fans.

With so many authors responsible for the adventures of The Phantom Detective, there are obviously high points and not so high points throughout the series in terms of quality. A certain number of traits, however, seem to run standard for nearly all the entries in the series. The plot moves quickly and usually efficiently, going from intense action to actual mystery solving to focusing on the intent of the crooks and back again, the stories overall do not slow down enough, ensuring the listener is engaged from beginning to end. Another similarity is the willingness of authors to put The Phantom Detective in situations that he may not survive. Although he is a master sleuth, he is also one that makes mistakes, encounters obstacles, and often ends up in spots that end with him just barely escaping. He is fallible, a man behind the mask, not some larger than life character that listeners could never identify with. Granted, his pastime involves punching criminals and fighting evil, but even in doing that, The Phantom Detective is much more relatable than his Pulp peers.

The Phantom and the Crime Legion was originally published in the October 1940 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
