Read by Roger Price
Magic meets mystery as George Chance battles crime as the Green Ghost! Thrills, legerdemain, and suspense — all courtesy of the most extraordinary man-hunter the world has ever known!
The Green Ghost, master of magic and crusher of crime, pits courage and craft against merciless greed when he answers the grim challenge of a baffling murder riddle!
As The Green Ghost, George Chance takes on criminals and murderers, using his skills as a stage magician and largely self taught criminologist in his fight for justice. He also, like many pulp heroes of the era, has a supporting cast, a team of sorts that help him in his crusade. The six people, yes, six, a large number of allies for a pulp hero, that lend The Green Ghost a hand all bring their own abilities and uses into play throughout the stories, but the group is evenly divided along certain lines.
Ned Standish’s role is fairly obvious as Police Commissioner, as is Robert Demarest’s, Medical Examiner. These men represent the law enforcement assistance that The Green Ghost, a clear vigilante, gets in his work. Even Joe Harper, playboy and gambler, falls into the law/crime side of the equation, being a man on the inside of sorts able to offer all sorts of underworld information.
The three remaining assistants to The Green Ghost actually fill that role in a few ways. Merry White functions both as George Chance’s love interest and his magician’s assistant, which means she has certain knowledge like Chance to offer when necessary. Glen Saunders’ primary function is to act as Chance’s double, a handy trick for any pulp hero to have. Tiny Tim Terry, a little person, brings a background of circus performing with him and, as often happens in pulp tales, this makes him a valuable asset.
The Case of the Flaming Fist was originally published in the pages of The Green Ghost Detective magazine in the Winter of 1941 and is read with mysterious and magical force by Roger Price.
