It may seem odd that a character who only had fourteen original appearances still resonates with fans and pulp readers today, but The Green Ghost definitely fits that profile.
Originally debuting in 1940 in The Ghost Super Detective Magazine, George Chance’s alter ego was actually the magazine’s title character. Stepping down off the stage as a magician, Chance threw himself headlong into the battle for justice as the scary masked figure known only as The Ghost. That is, except when he was referred to as The Super Detective. The stories at this point were much as they would remain throughout the series, well told mysteries mixing in elements of horror with the concept of a masked hero that was exceedingly popular in Pulps at that time.
Even with that formula, however, editorial staff at Thrilling Publications/Standard Magazine felt that the series needed something else, a little more terror perhaps. So George Chance added a green glow and more horrific appearance to his crime fighting outfit and the name changed to The Green Ghost, mostly dropping The Super Detective tagline. This change is odd only in that it was really the only significant change to the series overall. Chance’s methods remained the same, his supporting cast still helped out as always, and the level of criminal never rose to monster or mad scientist. The fact that there was so little change and that the stories remained consistent likely contribute to why the character is still fondly remembered.
