The Great Gildersleeve is not only a fantastic comedy, but it’s also a fascinating study in how a character can evolve. Originally, Gildy was created simply as a comic foil on Fibber McGee and Molly. To give him a reason to move, however, writer Leonard Levinson gave Gildy a suddenly deceased brother who had two children in Summerfield. But this sudden transition to being caregiver and family man didn’t happen overnight. Over the years, Gildy becomes less pompous and garrulous, less self centered, and more focused on not only providing for Leroy and Marjorie, but being a part of something beyond his own front yard.

Whenever Gildersleeve needed to vent or boast, he made his way to Mr. Peavey’s drugstore. Peavey, as played by veteran actor Richard LeGrand, was the long suffering listening ear that Gildy always regaled or assaulted with his latest victory or, more often than not, his most recent troubles. Peavey spoke with a twang heavily rooted in the Midwest and would often respond to Gildersleeve’s rants and ideas with “Well, now, I wouldn’t say that.” This became the most popular catchphrase of The Great Gildersleeve, a program known for coining well used catchphrases.

The Widow Ransom would play a key part both in the early and later years of The Great Gildersleeve. Shirley Mitchell, the actress bringing the amorous Widow to life in the show, got the role, in a way accidentally. Hal Peary, apparently dropped in to to see Dinah Shore. Shirley Mitchell, recently moving from Chicago, was living with Shore. It is debated that it was either Shore or her secretary using a Southern accent that caught Peary’s attention. Either way, she didn’t wish to be in Perry’s new show when asked. Mitchell then proceeded to put on a Southern accent and asked ‘How about me?’ The Widow Ransom, according to Peary, had been found.

THE GREAT GILDERSLEEVE is one of my favorite OTR comedy programs and the treatment they receive from Radio Archives is nothing short of sensational.
