Space Patrol
Volume 7

“High adventure in the wild, vast reaches of space! Missions of daring in the name of interplanetary justice! Travel into the future with Buzz Corry, commander-in-chief of the Space Patrol!”

Space Patrol holds a place in history few shows do. Although it started four months after the television version, the radio show aired until March 1955. The television show ended eight months earlier. One of the reasons for the longevity of the radio show likely lies in the fact that although seeing Buzz and Cadet Happy take on the likes of Agent X and Mister Proteus was neat, the restrictions of television, especially with a nearly non existent budget, limited the range of stories to be told. Radio, on the other hand, had no such limitations and Buzz’s adventures could take place anywhere the writer’s imagination could go.

Created by Mike Moser, Space Patrol was not wholly original, owing a debt to such science fiction pioneers as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. Where Space Patrol veered off into its own territory, though, was the fact that essentially the show was a futuristic police program. Buzz and his crew fought criminals just like Joe Friday and other cop types on the air and even if Space Patrol didn’t have the air of authenticity that others had, it still had enough of that ‘cop’ feel that fans remembered it being about “space police” for years after.

The radio version of Space Patrol was written by Lou Huston and directed by Larry Robertson, both taking full advantage of the almost limitlessness of the program being on radio. One of the neat innovations of the radio program was that there was no musical soundtrack. Any accompaniment or sound effect needed was either handled the old fashioned way by using objects to recreate sounds or by manipulating sound patterns to create eerie, exotic noises.
