Description   Suspense Volume 27     “And now...another tale well-calculated to keep you in ... SUSPENSE!”   Many episodes of Suspense were original stories written for the show. The writer responsible for the majority of these as well as many of the adaptations of other works was noted mystery and crime novelist John Dickson Carr. Known for creating Dr. Fell and other recurring detectives, Carr is best remembered as an author who did not rely on the out of the ordinary or fantastic to build his stories, which often featured almost unsolvable crimes. What Carr did best was balance the ‘hard to solve mystery’ with the reality of how a regular person might react to being thrown into a strange situation. This skill of Carr’s is what appealed to Suspense producer William Spier the most about working with him. Spier enjoyed episodes where listeners could relate to seemingly normal people suddenly faced with situations where they had to react in ways not normal for them and Carr was excellent at producing such stories.   Many of the adaptations performed on Suspense, however, also stand out as classic episodes. The two part ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’ starring Herbert Marshall, broadcast on January 5th and 12th, 1953, is a solid adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. Even though the original story does not provide a resolution to the mystery, the writers for Suspense came up with a conclusion that is, for most listeners, a satisfying ending. The attention to the original work is quite evident as well, preserving the spirit and as much of the original concept as possible. Marshall’s performance is stellar and the supporting cast make a 19th Century mystery not only exciting, but inviting for 20th Century listeners.
