"Countdown for blastoff ... X Minus five ... four ... three ... two ... X Minus one ... Fire!"

‘The Cave Of Night’ is considered by many fans and experts to be one of the best episodes of X Minus One produced. Focused on an astronaut marooned in a crippled space craft and efforts made to rescue him, the script was adapted from a story printed in Galaxy Magazine in 1955 and written by James E. Gunn. With his first written work being a play, Gunn began writing science fiction in 1948 and became a writer of pulp science fiction. Galaxy Magazine published four of his stories in the 1950s, each of these finding their way onto X Minus One as adaptations. With over twenty-five books and 100 short stories to his credit, Gunn also built a career as an academic expert on science fiction as a genre.

Gunn brought a very intimate, very personal touch to his work. Utilizing the concepts available in science fiction, Gunn is known for taking the fantastic and making it very simple and focused on the individual. This is very evident in ‘The Cave of Night’ as adapted by Ernest Kinoy for X Minus One. Although there are some differences between the story and the program, the basic concept of man against all odds is truly clear in both.

Performed as if a newscaster is reviewing his lines concerning the tragedy of the stranded astronaut, this episode both embraces the science fiction aspects of space travel, while also taking a very human look at such emotions as desperation, hopelessness, and isolation. As the episode unfolds, listeners become extremely invested in not only the fate of the astronaut, but also the struggles those trying to save him go through. This theme is not only mirrored in later works of science fiction, like The Martian, but also in such real-life instances as the Apollo 13 mission.

Thrill to twelve episodes of the best science fiction from the Golden Age of Radio, including ‘The Cave of Night’ in X Minus One, Volume 3 restored to sparkling audio quality by Radio Archives!
