The Whistler

“I am the Whistler and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak!”

Footsteps that surround the listener as they echo off unseen walls, a strange whistling evolving into an eerie tune rising to a crescendo. Although done best as the opening of The Whistler, other radio shows made use of a similar opening, almost exact in many details. The Saint starring Vincent Price is probably the most glaring example, using every aspect of The Whistler’s opening, only changing the tune. Other programs, such as Bulldog Drummond and The Private Files of Rex Saunders, also took their cues from the opening moments of The Whistler.

One of the most memorable aspects of The Whistler is the show’s haunting whistled theme. Wilbur Hatch composed the program’s music and conducted the show’s orchestra. Hatch first began working in radio in 1922 as a pianist in Chicago. He moved on to Los Angeles where he created music for several shows, including Suspense, Frontier Gentleman, Meet Corliss Archer, and Our Miss Brooks, among others. Hatch also, following his radio career, continued in television, actually composing and conducting some of the music performed by the Desi Arnaz Orchestra on I Love Lucy.

The Whistler shared several aspects with other hosts of radio anthology shows, from the Mysterious Traveler to the Hermit in The Hermit’s Cave, everything from their roles as passive observers to some sort of trademark laugh or phrase. A common characteristic amongst all these types of characters was definitely present in The Whistler - the almost arcane knowledge of the evil that lies in every man’s heart.

Experience the weird justice of The Whistler in this astounding Radio Archives collection. Listen to twelve broadcasts in The Whistler Volume 9, features twelve original CBS network Signal Oil sponsored broadcasts, as aired from August 6 to October 29, 1945.
