The Phantom Detective #93 Audiobook
The Phantom and the Green Glare Murders
by Robert Wallace
Read by Milton Bagby
Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime! Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’s masked nightmare!
The relentless scourge of the underworld battles with grim desperation to forestall a hideous holocaust of crime! Follow the Phantom on the trail of the sinister Green God who strikes terror in the heart of a great nation’s capital...
Richard Curtis Van Loan returned from The Great War and felt as if he was a man without purpose, lost in the world. This was not a feeling unknown to the readers of The Phantom Detective. Even though many assume that pulp magazines were read primarily by children, the actual aim of most publishers and titles was for a different demographic, that of both men and women alike, adults often over the age of twenty-five. To attract women, publishers put out romance magazines of all types, making it the leading genre in Pulp magazines, as it is today in the book market. For men, the plan to attract a more mature readership than those reading Action Comics was more of a shotgun approach, taking advantage of various genres without sliding in the trappings of another. To this purpose, the lead stories in various magazines utilized certain hooks to bring in readers, often focusing on violence, crime solving, or outrageous adventure. Another angle, however, was to make the pulp reader identify with the hero in the story. This was extremely successful for the Romance Pulps. Although the majority of The Phantom Detective’s readership did not include wealthy millionaires, it was made of men who had something else in common with Van Loan. Either as veterans of the Great War or casualties of the Depression, they too were without a sense of direction.
The Phantom and the Green Glare Murders was originally published in the November 1940 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
