The couple that live here are engaged in their usual activities: the wife is in the kitchen washing the dinner dishes and the husband is in the living room smoking his pipe. Suddenly he's inspired to break out his old ukulele and play himself a tune. He gets up from his chair and heads for the hall closet, opens the door, and...

Now, if we were anywhere else but Wistful Vista USA, this little scenario would likely end with a musical solo...but, because we're at the home of Fibber McGee and Molly, we know for sure exactly what's going to happen next. The man of the house will open that door and all of the books and contraptions and souvenirs and junk that he's been stuffing in there for years will come pouring out - complete with a string-less ukulele that's been that way since at least 1937. "Gotta clean out that closet one of these days," he'll say, and we'll laugh like we always do because almost every one of us has a closet or a junk drawer or a basement just like that in our own homes.

The long-running success of "Fibber McGee and Molly" was based on familiar things like that overstuffed closet, doorbells that announced the arrival of some eccentric neighbor, telephone operators who would bring you up to date on the town gossip before you could place a call, and get-rich-quick schemes that never quite panned out. Whether we wanted to admit it or not, an awful lot of us were either like Fibber, full of tall-tales and big talk, or like Molly, long-suffering but sweet, loving, and down to earth. We knew these people and, sometimes, we even were these people.

It's not surprising, then, that "Fibber McGee and Molly" enjoyed one of the most successful runs in radio history, being heard on the air in one form or another for nearly twenty-five years. It's also not surprising that today, over fifty years after they made their last appearance as a team, Jim and Marion Jordan remain a part of our culture; people of a certain age still say "Tain't funny, McGee" when someone's joke falls flat and many an overstuffed storage cupboard is referred to as "McGee's Closet".

15 min episodes late in the run of this series. Delightful. No more music and songs though in these truncated episodes.

What fun listening to the two audio volumes I just bought. It makes you smile when you hear all the things Fibber get's into. thank you for giving me the opportunity to buy all of these old radio programs. Couldn't ask for anything better.
