One of the reasons Champion is not recognized as much as others might be is that he often wrote under pen names of his own choosing or house names in his early career. Even though he didn’t get credit in the byline for himself, Champion wrote volumes of stories yearly during his Pulp career, making him extremely prolific.   In the late 1930s, Champion wrote more under his own name and created several unique characters. Inspector Ahloff was a top New York detective who, due to a mishap in an investigation, lost his legs and becomes an embittered soul. Champion also crated such memorable characters as Rex Sackler, a penny pinching private eye and Mariano Mercado, a hypochondriac.
