James Christopher, Operator #5 Audiobook
#21 Raiders of the Red Death
by Emile C. Tepperman writing as Curtis Steele
Read by Milton Bagby

The first reports were incredible. Montezuma the Third, Emperor of the new born Aztec Empire, was slaughtering American troops with a deadly, new weapon… sacrificing captives to his ancient gods… America seemed condemned to degrading slavery. Operator #5, Ace of the Secret Service, fought against overwhelming odds. And while the gods of a long-dead civilization revel in carnage, the very existence of the white race in America is apparently doomed…!

They called James Christopher Operator #5—undercover agent, patriotic protector of America’s sacred shores. His job is to root out subversive elements and stand as the first line of defense against foreign invasions from all quarters. Aided by street-smart Tim Donovan and newspaperwoman Diane Elliott, Jimmy Christopher was the James Bond of the 1930s! But can even these resourceful comrades hold the line when the world is filled with ambitious dictators bent on conquering America?

After two years, Frederick C. Davis grew tired of saving the United States through his surrogate hero, and bowed out. His editors required that he write under the house name of Curtis Steele, so readers didn’t notice when Emile C. Tepperman and then Wayne Rogers took over the series. Tepperman became famous for breaking the monthly menace format, and launching a continuing serial revolving around the Purple Invasion, wherein a Hitlerian Axis of European powers actually succeeds to conquering America, forcing Jimmy Christopher and his courageous crew into the roles of ragged guerrillas desperately battling to reclaim the nation, state by state. Fans have dubbed this thirteen-part saga, “The War and Peace of the pulps.”

Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher. Only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit — and stands prepared to perish to protect his country.

Milton Bagby is a veteran radio announcer and voiceover specialist who first turned to audiobooks in 2010. Since then, Milton has worked on close to two hundred audiobook projects and is a 2017 Audie Awards winner, the audiobook industry's highest award. Drawing upon years of stage acting and the occasional bit part in films, Milton uses his experience to create characters that stand out in the ear of the listener.

“I am very much aware that a perfect stranger is going to invest many hours listening to me tell a story. I do my best to give the listener an experience in which the characters in that story come alive and sound real.”

When not behind a microphone, Milton is a writer. In addition to the well-received Rick Burkhart crime novels, Milton writes a line of 1950s style pulp stories, and is the author of dozens of magazine articles and two non-fiction books. Milton and his wife live in Nashville.
