Description

Gunsmoke
Volume 17

Around Dodge City and in the territory on west -- there’s just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers -- and that’s with a U.S. Marshall and the smell of “Gunsmoke”! “Gunsmoke” starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America -- and the story of a man who moved with it. I’m that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshall -- the first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It’s a chancy job -- and it makes a man watchful...and a little lonely.

William Conrad contributed more than just his stunning performance as Matt Dillon to Gunsmoke. The most experienced radio actor in the company, Conrad often offered his thoughts and suggestions on multiple aspects of the series, including even naming and expanding characters that would become listener favorites.

Voiced by Parley Baer, Chester Proudfoot was originally just a nameless townsman that Dillon interacted with on occasion as demanded by the script. “Chester” came into being as a fully fleshed out character in the Gunsmoke radio series when Baer acting on that impulse some actors occasionally have about their characters, ad-libbed the name “Chester” during a take. Baer’s ad-libbing almost ended up on the cutting room floor until William Conrad intervened on “Chester’s” behalf. Conrad’s vast experience as a radio actor, narrator, and even on occasion, director played a vital role in Gunsmoke’s success on the radio. Conrad voiced his support to Baer’s naming of his unidentified “Townsman” character and fleshing out his background.

Conrad also gave Doc Adams his name. He was a bit playful in naming Doc – who was at first a grumpy, kind of grim and dark character with a mysterious past. As a fan of the cartoonist Charles Addams, Conrad gave the still unnamed town doctor the surname of Adams as a wink and a nod towards the ghoulishness of The Addams Family.

5 of 5 Amazing cast of characters........ May 28, 2022
Reviewer: Richard McLeod from RIVERSIDE, CA United States
John Meston, the primary writer of the "Gunsmoke" stories (with editorial approval over the later writer's and their stories such as Les Crutchfield) created 4 unforgettable characters with the leads of Marshall Dillon, Chester, Doc Adams and Miss Kitty, but the characters who fill the many later shows are equally as intriguing if only heard once.

In this volume, we are introduced only once to Crowbait Bob, who fits that bill.  There are many other characters that are in only one of the shows throughout the series, but their uniqueness shows the brilliance of "Gunsmoke's" creator John Meston and the unique names given these characters which became one of the Meston Hallmarks.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
