"...designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure..."
One of radio’s most prolific actors and an Escape regular – appearing in 54 episodes, John Dehner was cast in the lead role of Escape’s two-part adaptation of “Earth Abides” - a classic and sweeping post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by George R. Stewart. Dehner also starred as Paladin in the radio version of Have Gun – Will Travel, and in Frontier Gentleman, a western series about a British journalist that opened with a trumpet theme by Jerry Goldsmith. John Dehner lent his voice to 54 episodes of Escape.
Of the 235 episodes that aired during Escape’s seven year run starting back in 1947 and ending in 1954; twenty-nine were repeated scripts. Yet none of those twenty-nine episodes were simply rebroadcasts. Each show was re-performed; and in most cases was re-scripted to produce an entirely new production of a popular episode that gave the listening audience craved and demanded to hear again. The most popularly repeated and re-performed scripts were: “A Shipment of Mute Fate” which aired four times; “Three-Skeleton Key” which aired three times; “The Man Who Could Work Miracles,” which aired three times; and “The Fourth Man” which also aired three times.”
Inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame back in 1997; William Conrad began his radio career in California in the late 1930s. When the United States entered into the global conflict of the Second World War, Conrad put his radio acting career on hold and enlisted, becoming a fighter pilot. After the war ended, he returned to radio and picked up right where he left off. In addition to lending his voice in a record 90 episodes of Escape; Conrad also shared narrating duties on the show. Perhaps the hardest working actor in radio of his or any other proceeding generation, Conrad appeared in some 7,500 radio shows during his career.
