Escape
Volume 8

"...designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure..."

Escape allowed many voice actors to flex their creative talents in many unexpected ways. John Dehner, Antony Ellis, Ben Wright, and Tony Barrett were more than just enticing and appealing voices bringing life to potentially doomed characters on the written page. Dehner, Ellis, Wright, and Barrett also wrote original scripts that aired on Escape.

Gerald Mohr’s radio career did not begin and end with being a narrator for Escape. Mohr went on to make more than five hundred appearances as a regular and/or guest character in a twenty year period that spanned the 1930s to the early 1950s after his stint with Orson Wells’ Mercury Theater. In addition to being one of the actors who portrayed Archie Goodwin in The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe; Gerald Mohr made frequent appearances in The Whistler; Frontier Town, Our Miss Brooks, The Shadow of Fu Manchu, Box Thirteen, and The Damon Runyon Theater. With his rich and pleasant baritone voice, Mohr also brought to life to Philip Marlow, Raymond Chandler’s hardboiled detective, for 119 shows between 1948-1951.

Escape not only proved to be an excellent stage for the character actors of Radio’s Golden Age to shine and hone their stagecraft; but the radio show also provided to be an excellent arena for musicians to master their craft in. Trumpeter Seymour Arnold Feuerman, a.k.a. Cy Feuer, was one of those musicians whose musical scores sent shivers up and down the spines of listeners. Feuer was also the musical director, arranger, and/or composer of more than 125 B-movies, many of them serials and westerns at Republic Pictures. After deciding that he was a flop at composing movie scores – despite the fact the he had five Oscar nominations to his credit, Feuer teamed up with Ernest H. Martin; who had been the head of comedy programming at CBS Radio, and the two had a brilliant, Tony Award winning career on Broadway for such shows as Guys and Dolls and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
