Escape
Volume 13

“...designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure...”

During the course of its seven year run on radio, Escape was moved up and down the broadcast day and time dial a good eighteen times before the last show of the series aired. CBS kept moving its popular radio program all across a wide range of broadcast times and days, which prevented the show from obtaining long term-sponsorship. Yet despite CBS’ hodge-podge approach, Escape did manage to get sponsors – just not regular, long term ones. Among the companies that sponsored Escape in a fairly limited fashion were the Richfield Oil Corporation of New York, the Ford Motor Company, and the Chrysler-Plymouth Company.

Of the 235 episodes that aired during Escape’s seven year run starting back in 1947 and ending in 1954, twenty-nine were repeated scripts. Yet none of those twenty-nine episodes were simply rebroadcasts. Each show was re-performed and in most cases was re-scripted to produce an entirely new production of a popular episode that the listening audience craved and demanded to hear again. The most popularly repeated and re-performed scripts were: ‘A Shipment of Mute Fate’ which aired four times; ‘Three-Skeleton Key,’ featured on this collection, which aired three times; ‘The Man Who Could Work Miracles,’ which aired three times; and ‘The Fourth Man’ which also aired three times.

Escape not only proved to be an excellent stage for the character actors of Radio’s Golden Age to shine and hone their stagecraft, but the radio show also provided to be an excellent arena for musicians to master their craft in. Trumpeter Seymour Arnold Feuerman, a.k.a. Cy Feuer, was one of those musicians whose musical scores sent shivers up and down the spines of listeners, not only with the help of a full orchestra in Escape, but through multiple movies and Broadway shows.

Thrill to high adventure in this 6 hour, 6 CD Collection of Escape, Volume 13, fully restored by Radio Archives.
