The Adventures of Maisie
The 1930s and 1940s was a great time to go to the movies. Not only was it a time of glamorous stars in glamorous films, it was also the era of the double feature. Think of it: for a cost of a dime or a quarter, you could treat yourself to a full evening of entertainment, offering a big expensive feature, a newsreel, shorts, cartoons, a travelogue, and then a
feature that was often just as entertaining as the first.
All the movie studios produced second features - they called them "B" pictures then - but the ones produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer were often considered the best. It's no wonder that audiences enjoyed them, with such long-running series as the Andy Hardy movies and the Dr. Kildare dramas to attract audiences. But, for many, the best series that MGM produced were the hilarious Maisie comedies, starring the beautiful and talented Ann Sothern as an irrepressible showgirl with a nerve of solid steel, but a heart of pure gold.
Maisie Ravere was a sweet but often meddlesome Brooklyn-born bombshell who was forever finding herself in hot water. A talented singer and dancer, she thought of show business as her main profession - but she often had to turn to more mundane lines of work to make ends meet. In the films, circumstances found her traveling from New York to Africa to Reno, working as everything from a cowgirl to a gold prospector to a Rosie the Riveter, finding romance, mystery, and comedic hijinks along the way.
The Maisie films were inexpensive to produce and, over the course of eight years, the nine entries in the series generated big returns from loyal audiences. So it only made sense that Maisie would also do well on radio - and, in 1945, CBS brought Ann Sothern to the microphone in a live comedy series. Surprisingly, this turned out to be a misfire; the series ran for just over a year and was quickly forgotten. But no one was going to keep a gal like Maisie down for long; in 1949, when M-G-M got into the radio syndication business,
"The Adventures of Maisie"
returned in a well-made series produced and prerecorded at NBC in Hollywood. In this incarnation, Ann Sothern was supported by a virtual who's who of top talent from "Radio Row" - everyone from Sheldon Leonard and Hans Conried to Elvia Allman, Lurene Tuttle, and Frank Nelson. Bright, brash, and funny, "The Adventures of Maisie" was finally the hit on radio that it always deserved to be - and no doubt led Ann Sothern to a successful career on television, too.
Since it was prerecorded, "The Adventures of Maisie" enjoyed a long life on radio, being aired on both the Mutual network and on local stations well into the mid-1950s. Heard today, it remains a bright and hilarious companion to a movie series that continues to captivate and entertain more that seventy years after it first began. Earlier, Radio Archives issued a ten-hour set of Maisie shows that proved very popular with our customers and we're delighted to also offer a second volume, a six-hour set featuring a dozen more of the hilarious capers of the saucy and outspoken gal from Brooklyn. It's a set full of laugh-out-loud fun that you'll want play and enjoy again and again. Here's the complete content:
