The movie studios called them serials but, for the millions of kids who made a weekly pilgrimage to their local movie house every Saturday afternoon, they were and will always be known as cliffhangers. Chock full of action and excitement, these multi-chapter adventures were a required part of any decent weekend matinee program at thousands of theaters nationwide from the 1930s thru the mid-1950s. And since many of them were based on equally popular comic books, pulp stories, and radio series, they offered kids the chance to enjoy their heroes and heroines in a brand new way, week after exciting week, as Superman, Zorro, the Green Hornet, the Lone Ranger, The Shadow, and practically every other pop culture icon regularly escaped certain death to eventually triumph over evil.
