The Lux Radio Theatre
Period Pieces
Liner Notes by Nick Santa Maria

"Lux Presents Hollywood!"

Ornate period costumes, military uniforms, and interesting hats are all on display in your mind's eye as you listen to the best of the Hollywood period pieces.

We begin with the swashbuckling Errol Flynn reprising his role as the dashing, Captain Blood. Flynn plays Dr. Peter Blood, an honest man who is sold into slavery by the wicked uncle of his lady love, Olivia de Havilland. Pirates of the Caribbean be damned, pirate stories don't get much better than this, folks. Next up is the stirring action adventure The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, with the film's original star, Gary Cooper. Brian Ahearn lends stalwart support in the role originally played by Franchot Tone in this tale of duty and heroism.

If I Were King, is the story of Francois Villon and his mercurial relationship with the aging King Louis the XI (Sir Cedric Hardwicke in the role played on film by Basil Rathbone). Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. plays the charmingly poetic Villon, while Frances Dee recreates her role from the Paramount production. Emily Bronte's classic brooding romance novel, Wuthering Heights is next. It's the tragic story of the unrequited love. Ida Lupino plays Cathy, and Basil Rathbone plays Heathcliff (the original stars were Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier). It's a lot of fun to hear the usually villainous Rathbone play the love interest for a change, and he comports himself very well, thank you very much.

The exciting Two Years Before the Mast is a sprawling tale hardship and brutality on the high seas. It stars Alan Ladd as a rebellious sailor in the clutches of a cruel and heartless captain, played by a Captain Bligh-like Howard DaSilva. Both of them starred in the original 1949 film and here reprise their characters with gusto. And finally we have The Foxes of Harrow starring beautiful Maureen O'Hara (in her original role), and John Hodiak (in the Rex Harrison role) playing a sordid and abrasive adventurer trying to make his way in old New Orleans.

If you love great novels then listen to these wonderful stories for the ages. The Lux Radio Theatre - Period Pieces, meticulously restored by Radio Archives.
