With these words, young listeners were whisked from their daily lives in the present into a new frontier of action, adventure, and discovery every week with each new episode of Space Patrol. Space Patrol, both on television and radio, was not necessarily an original program, yet that in part is what makes it significant. This program and the others like it are indicative of a shift in not only what the public wanted to hear, but also in what society at the time desired.
Only a handful of years after the end of World War II, much had changed in the United States. Things that once inspired and entertained readers and listeners and watchers of all sorts had lost their luster. When life returned to what passed for normal, the usual sources of distraction and entertainment didn't hold the same appeal. Westerns, once the most popular genre in almost any medium, faded, the concept of the cowboy losing out to another kind of frontiersman. A genre that really had only formally existed for barely two decades took hold with American fans and science fiction enjoyed a boom like it had yet seen.
Buzz Corry and his crew allowed fans to escape the still fresh horrors and changes of reality and yet find the same excitement as they had enjoyed in Westerns and other tales. Monsters and aliens provided the evil in the universe and demanded heroes that sacrificed everything to combat them and keep the world safe. Space Patrol was comfort food for a still distressed population, a way to escape through the radio and find fun and distraction out amongst the stars.
