The Great Gildersleeve
Volume 18

The Great Gildersleeve had a sixteen-year run on the air. Unlike most comedies, this show changed and shifted in ways that allowed the audience to experience, even grow up with the characters. Listeners tuned in as Leroy and Marjorie grew up, even getting to be a part of Marjorie and Bronco’s marriage and the birth of their children. Gildy himself grew from a two dimensional laugh to a fully realized character who experienced the hilarious and even heartbreaking struggle of life and love, the latter several times. This sort of storytelling gave listeners a connection to The Great Gildersleeve that is still present and effective today.

Gildersleeve did not carry his self-titled show all on his own. Leroy and Marjorie, and Birdie Lee added a particular spark to the comedic family antics of the show. Summerfield itself boasted a few citizens that also made their mark. From Bronco Thompson, the man Marjorie would eventually marry to Forrest Peavey, the twangy pharmacist to Leila Ransom, the widow with her sights set on Gildy, these and more characters helped elevate The Great Gildersleeve from being just another comedy show to one that struck a funny and often loving chord with its audience.

Summerfield typified small town America. Most of the episodes took place within eight blocks around the Gildersleeve home. There was a park nearby. Mr. Peavey’s drugstore cornered on the street that Gildy lived on, Judge Hooker living just across the street from the pharmacy. Down the avenue was Floyd’s Barber Shop. A water reservoir also was oddly placed in this eight block area, but would prove to provide Gildy with something he needed - a job as water commissioner.

Big improvement over those "free" files that have been kicking around for years. At first I was concerned about the first 2 shows. There was a sort of echo throughout. It is NOT a processing glitch. Both of these programs were broadcast from remote locations so the echos come from the theater
