Amos 'n' Andy
Volume 11

The fact that Amos ’n’ Andy were played by two white actors has been a point of discussion since the program began. When the show switched to a situation comedy format, though, the cast was expanded and a number of African American actors were brought into the Amos ’n’ Andy show. James Baskett, Eddie Green, Ruby, Vivian, and Dorothy Dandridge, William Walker, and Amanda and Lillian Randolph, among others, brought new characters to life and were added, according to most sources, at the behest of Gosden and Correll.

Although some of the African American actors played comedic roles on Amos ’n’ Andy, several performers did not use dialect in their dialogue, a mainstay of some of the comedy in the show. The Dandridges, William Walker, and Roy Glenn, among others, played their roles straight, black actors playing black characters without any exaggeration or intentional inflection. Interviewed in 1951, Ruby Dandridge commented that all of the black actors on the show were encouraged to let the creators know if any situation or even lines made them uncomfortable.

Amos ’n’ Andy being a radio show allowed for talented performers to play a variety of roles without their gender, age, or ethnicity playing into it. Of course, Gosden and Correll are the most obvious examples of this, but another character that grew to be a fan favorite also fits this bill. Asian American actress Barbara Jean Wong, an actress known for many child voice roles, played Arbadella, Amos’ daughter. Arbadella is remembered still today primarily because of the annual Christmas tradition on the program where Amos would explain The Lord’s Prayer to her as she went to bed. This, combined at times with Andy working to get Arbadella a gift she wanted, stands out with fans today as one of the most cherished moments of old time radio.

The twelve episodes in Amos ’n’ Andy Volume 11, restored to sparkling audio quality, clearly shows the enduring humor and impact this series had on America, then and now.
