We invite you to enjoy stories that keep you in…Suspense!

“If I ever do any more radio work, I want to do it on Suspense, where I get a good chance to act,” Cary Grant was quoted as saying back in 1943. Grant’s great love for Suspense was due to William Spier. Spier was chief of the writers’ department and director of development at CBS in 1940. As co-producer of Suspense, Spier developed the show’s thriller/chiller/macabre genre into a formula with human drama that attracted the finest of Hollywood’s elite as well as the cream of radio’s great actors – including Grant, Orson Welles, and many others.

Many popular actors leaped at the chance to be cast in a role on Suspense. Spier made it a goal to take actors already stereotyped for certain roles and cast them on Suspense in parts his listeners would not expect. Peter Lorre, known often as a villain, made a turn as a cultured gentleman. Elliott Lewis, known by most radio fans as the drunken Remley in the Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show, took on the role of a deadly killer pursuing a desperate carhop, played by Judy Garland. Even Lena Horne and Dinah Shore, famous more as singers, took their turn as actors on Suspense.

Comedian Lucille Ball had a rather unexpected tie to Suspense that continued long after her performance in the “Dime A Dance” episode, which aired in Suspense in 1944. In the episode, Ms. Ball played a dance hall girl menaced by one of the gentlemen she had danced with. She was also a spokeswoman for Roma Wines. In full-color, two page magazine advertisements, Ms. Ball is quoted as saying; “It’s never too hot to be cool with Roma Wine Coolers.”

Discover how this program is truly the total package - expertly written stories, top performances from radio’s best actors, quality production values, and enough terror and mystery to make it fun. Suspense, Volume 11 from Radio Archives presents six hours of this radio classic restored to Sparkling audio quality.
