James Christopher, Operator #5 Audiobook
#15 Invasion of the Yellow Warlords
by Frederick C. Davis writing as Curtis Steele
Read by Milton Bagby

By land and by sea the ferocious Yellow Hordes descend upon the United States, dealing destruction with new and horrifying weapons: with viscid poisons, with lethal gases, with flaming thermite — and with an invisible death-force more fearful, more annihilating than any weapon yet known to man. Before the ruthless Asiatic Invaders even Operator #5, America’s Secret Service Ace, stands helpless — hunted like a rat, harried and set upon by those who should be striving shoulder to shoulder with him to turn back the greatest Yellow Threat ever to assail the bulwarks of Western Civilization!

In 1934, with Hitler consolidating power in Germany and the Japanese Empire on the rise in Asia, young pulp publisher Harry Steeger decided the American public was ready for a magazine chronicling the exploits of an undercover agent dedicated to defending the United States from foreign aggressors. With his editors, Steeger came up with a title, Secret Service Operator #5, and a cover depicting a masked terrorist fleeing an exploding White House. Over this loomed the resourceful hero, blazing away with a .45 automatic. His job: to defeat a new invasion of the United States—every month!

“The basic concept of Operator #5 came from Harry Steeger, the publisher, or Rogers Terrill, the editor, or both,” author Frederick C. Davis recalled. “It was that Operator #5 must save the United States from total destruction in every story, every month. When I was called in to start the series Terrill already had a cover illustration—the White House being blown up. I did the first Operator #5 around this picture.”
Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher. Only one man, but a man who embodied the American spirit — and stands prepared to perish to protect his country.

Milton Bagby is a veteran radio announcer and voiceover specialist who first turned to audiobooks in 2010. Since then, Milton has worked on over a hundred audiobook projects as a narrator or producer. Drawing upon years of stage acting and the occasional bit part in films, Milton uses his experience to create characters that stand out in the ear of the listener.

“I am very much aware that a perfect stranger is going to invest eight or ten hours listening to me tell a story. I do my best to give the listener an experience in which the characters in that story come alive and sound real.”

When not behind a microphone, Milton is a writer. In addition to the well-received Rick Burkhart crime novels, Milton writes a line of 1950s style pulp stories, and is the author of dozens of magazine articles and two non-fiction books. Milton and his wife live in Nashville.
