“I am the Whistler and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak!”

A total of 692 episodes of The Whistler were produced. Approximately more than 400 have survived, meaning a majority of the series is still in existence. It is more, however, than just the fact so many episodes survive that fans find to love about this show.

One of the most memorable aspects of The Whistler is the show’s haunting whistled theme. Wilbur Hatch not only composed the theme, but also was the conductor of the show’s orchestra and composer of all of the program’s music. Hatch first began working in radio in 1922 as a pianist in Chicago. He moved on to Los Angeles where he created music for several shows, including Suspense, Frontier Gentleman, Meet Corliss Archer, and Our Miss Brooks, among others. Hatch also, following his radio career, continued in television, actually composing and conducting some of the music performed by the Desi Arnaz Orchestra on I Love Lucy.

The opening of The Whistler is another well remembered component of the show. Footsteps that surround the listener as they echo off unseen walls, a strange whistling evolving into an eerie tune rising to a crescendo. Although done best on The Whistler, other radio shows made use of a similar opening, almost exact in many details. The Saint starring Vincent Price is probably the most glaring example, using every aspect of The Whistler’s opening, only changing the tune. Other programs, such as Bulldog Drummond and The Private Files of Rex Saunders, also took their cues from the opening moments of The Whistler.

Thrill to chilling tales of crime told only as The Whistler can in this remarkable Radio Archives collection. The Whistler Volume 17 features twelve original CBS network Signal Oil sponsored broadcasts, as aired in 1948 and 1949 and restored to sparkling digital quality by Radio Archives.
