The Phantom Detective #57 Audiobook
Minions of Death
by Robert Wallace
Read by Milton Bagby

Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime! Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’s masked nightmare!

Wild, laughing maniacs recruited to further the heinous plans of an arch-fiend terrorize a great city as crime follows crime in a blood-curdling procession of horror!

Of all the titles bestowed upon The Phantom Detective by his various authors, one stands out above all others-the fact that he is ‘a one-man army’ against crime. In nearly every tale in the series, readers learn that The Phantom Detective is much like a medieval knight of old, on a quest all his own to stamp out evil in the streets and beyond. Some might argue, however, that this isn’t true, that The Phantom Detective doesn’t stray too far from the model for almost all other Pulp Heroes.

With the Debut of The Shadow, it became stereotypical of the leads in Hero Pulps to have certain characteristics, one of the most apparent being that they had some sort of organization, a team that they worked with. The Shadow had his agents, Doc Savage had his highly skilled team of five, the Spider had a triad of three close knit associates, and so on. Yet, The Phantom Detective did not have such a support group, at least in the organized fashion of other heroes. He had a singular confidante, one person whom he trusted with his secret identity, Frank Havens. Havens did provide assistance at times, but he was not a ‘team’ member, but more of someone who knew how to get ahold of The Phantom Detective when necessary. Other characters also recurred, oftentimes helping Van Loan in his masked identity, including Havens’ daughter and The Phantom’s love interest, Muriel, but there was never an organization. The Phantom Detective truly fought alone!

‘Minions of Death’ was originally published in the November 1937 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.
