Escape
Volume 12

“...designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half-hour of high adventure...”

While actor William Conrad is perhaps best known as being the voice of Escape, the long running radio series had a total of five different narrators during its almost seven-year run. In addition to Conrad, Eric Snowden, Paul Frees, Lou Krugman, and Gerald Mohr brought the opening narrations of the radio series to life each week. Conrad and Frees are considered by many aficionados of Old Time Radio the best narrators of the series because their deep-toned inflections helped give the show additional gravitas. It was Krugman and Frees, though, who narrated the final season of the radio show.

Escape alumnus Gerald Mohr owes his entire career to a ruptured appendicitis. Before landing in the hospital, Mohr had been studying medicine at Columbia College with the goal of becoming a doctor. Mohr’s pleasant baritone voice not only caught the attention of all the nurses, but also that of a radio broadcaster who was recovering from surgery in the same hospital. Mohr was hired and became a junior broadcast reporter, then left the news department to become a regular player in Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater.

Gerald Mohr’s radio career did not begin and end with being a narrator for Escape. Mohr went on to make more than five hundred appearances as a regular and/or guest character in a twenty year period that spanned the 1930s on up to the early 1950s. In addition to being one of the actors who portrayed Archie Goodwin in The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe, Mohr made frequent appearances in The Whistler, Frontier Town, Our Miss Brooks, The Shadow of Fu Manchu, Box Thirteen, and Damon Runyon Theater. With his rich and pleasant baritone voice, Mohr also brought to life Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler’s hardboiled detective, for 119 shows between 1948-1951.

Enjoy the thrills and chills of Escape in this 6 hour, 6 CD collection of Escape, Volume 12 fully restored by Radio Archives.
