Of the actors and actresses known as “Whistler’s Children,” director George Allen saw particular skills in each one that he used to his benefit. Allen utilized Gerald Mohr of Phillip Marlowe fame for either rather sophisticated characters or street level criminal goons. When he needed ‘a perfect blowtop’, someone who could express losing his cool just the right way, Allen brought in Wally Maher. Hans Conried also had his own place in Allen’s top choices for the show.

The Whistler didn’t shy away from having women at the heart of the chilling crime stories it told. And fortunately for director George Allen, he had extremely capable actresses to pick from amongst Hollywood’s Radio Row. Betty Lou Gerson starred in several episodes because, according to Allen, she could play “parts that convey mental superiority, she’s perfect for women who have catty, fencing dialogue.” Likewise, Allen made great use of Lurene Tuttle, stating that she “can be anything: she may change her performance on the air as she finds another facet of the character; she picks out the parts of her characterization that didn’t ring right in rehearsal and corrects them.”

Of all the familiar voices on The Whistler, it was the title character himself no one knew. The Whistler’s identity was kept mostly a secret, especially from listeners, for ten years. Even though The Whistler was portrayed by several actors over the years, Bill Forman is recognized as the penultimate voice of the character.

Among the Most Prized Shows in My Collection	May 20, 2022

I've purchased five collections from the Archives and to say I'm delighted would be an understatement. The quality of the shows on these discs are truly exceptional. I have a huge collection of mp3 CDs plus about 800 reel to reel tapes, but the CDs that I've received from Radio Archives are among the most prized shows in my collection.

Honest Transfers	May 20, 2022

Apparently, Radio Archives is taking the precautions to make honest transfers with a minimum of extraneous sound processing. CEDAR is state of the art. I've been impressed with what a knowledgeable audio engineer can do with this system.
