The Lux Radio Theatre
Hollywood's Finest
Liner Notes by Nick Santa Maria

"Lux Presents Hollywood!"

You want stars? We got stars! You want the cream of the crop in Hollywood film classics? Look no farther, they’re here.

Quality Street starring Ruth Chatterton as a woman who poses as her non-existent younger niece in order to win the affections of a returning soldier, played by Brian Ahearn.

Next up is Oscar winner, it’s Paul Muni as he reprises his most famous role in The Story of Louis Pasteur. This historical drama chronicles the man who rocked the world of medicine with his discoveries.

In our next entry soap opera reigns supreme as Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor appear in Magnificent Obsession, both of whom starred in the 1935 Universal production. It’s a classic story of misplaced blame and the power of love as a healing force.

In A Stolen Life, Bette Davis reprises her role as twin sisters; one good and one, well, Bette Davis! She’s bad as only Bette can be. Glenn Ford plays the object of both their desires, and of course he marries the wrong one.

This is followed by Sunset Boulevard, Billy Wilder’s acidic taste of Hollywood’s forgotten star, Norma Desmond. Gloria Swanson and William Holden repeat their roles from this all-time classic film.

The African Queen stars Humphrey Bogart reprising his Academy Award winning performance as Charley Alnut, the slovenly boat captain; while Greer Garson takes over the role (from Katherine Hepburn) of the spinster missionary. Sparks fly when they’re forced to share a once in a lifetime adventure together.

Listen to some of the greatest films ever made and revel in the presence of true star power. Restored to sparkling audio quality by Radio Archives.

Nick Santa Maria, a published film historian and author, is the Project Producer for this series.

5 of 5 Lux Radio Theatre -- Always a favorite May 20, 2022
Reviewer: Robert Cockrum from TEMPLE, TX United States
If you are a fan of classic movies, then Lux Radio Theatre is a special treat. It's an interesting comparison study, too -- what was kept for radio, what had to go, and how they otherwise adapted the show. You also can tell who took to radio acting rather well and those who didn't. The sound? As always, excellent.
