The Great Gildersleeve
Volume 22

Being a family centered comedy, The Great Gildersleeve often revolved around the lives and antics of Gildy’s well behaved niece, Marjorie, and wiseacre nephew, Leroy. Portrayed originally by Lurene Tuttle, many of the episodes focused on Marjorie involved her suitors, and then her own family once one of the boyfriends, Bronco Thompson, married her. Gildy’s twelve-year-old nephew, Leroy, was actually portrayed by an adult, Walter Tetley. Tetley made a career of playing child roles as voice actor well into his thirties. Leroy was just obstinate and stubborn enough to be the perfect needle to pop the windbag Gildy at just the funniest moments.

Gildersleeve may have been the man of the house, but Birdie, the maid, ran things in the home on The Great Gildersleeve. Birdie over time was revealed as the real brains behind the operation of the family she took care of. This was due in part to writers wanting a more realistic portrayal of the character, but also much credit must be given to actress Lillian Randolph. She brought a whole range of emotions to the role of Birdie, from a joyous laugh to a compassion unmatched when necessary.

Whenever Gildersleeve needed to vent or boast about his life or family, he made his way to Mr. Peavey’s drugstore. Peavey, as played by Richard LeGrand, was the long suffering listening ear that Gildy always regaled or assaulted with his latest victory or, more often than not, his most recent troubles. Peavey spoke with a twang heavily rooted in the Midwest and would often respond to Gildersleeve’s rants and ideas with “Well, now, I wouldn’t say that.” This became the most popular catchphrase of The Great Gildersleeve, a program known for coining well used catchphrases.

Discover why The Great Gildersleeve is not only considered a great comedy, but also one of the best shows of classic radio in the twelve original broadcasts of The Great Gildersleeve, Volume 22, complete with Kraft Foods commercials and restored to sparkling digital quality.
