In its earliest years, television was nothing more than a novelty - something a tavern might install to draw customers who were curious to see whether the flickering and blurry images on those small black and white screens could possibly be of any interest to them. But by 1949, with sales skyrocketing from a few thousand sets a year to well over a million, it was clear that TV was here to stay. It quickly became obvious that, for those who had made their fame in radio, television was the future and many talented performers quickly made the transition into the new medium.
In addition to most of its top stars, many of radio's most popular programs made their way to the small screen as well. For shows as well as for performers, TV was definitely a crap shoot; some found renewed success, others enjoyed but a season or two. But, with radio quickly fading as America's favorite form of mass entertainment, almost everyone who was anyone found it important to give TV a try.
In this selection of DVDs, Radio Archives has selected a group of programs that, for the most part, had their roots in radio. You'll find familiar faces - Jack Benny, George Burns & Gracie Allen, Groucho Marx - as well as an interesting array of radio favorites like "Dragnet" and "Mr. & Mrs. North" in shows that were just as popular on television as they had been on radio.
